What medical treatments are used for endometriosis?
Doctors use two main treatments for endometriosis: medicine and surgery.
For some women with mild symptoms, pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) are sufficient to control the symptoms. For other women, hormones from a birth control pill or intrauterine device (IUD) can prevent the growth of endometrial tissue. Surgery is never a first response.
When to consider surgery
Your doctor may recommend surgery if your endometriosis is very painful and the medications have not helped. Surgery may also be an option if you've tried to get pregnant but failed. Removing endometrial tissue could increase your chances of getting pregnant. Having surgery is an important decision - especially if you are considering a hysterectomy, which removes your uterus and possibly your ovaries. Without ovaries and without a uterus, you cannot get pregnant.
What types of surgery are used to treat endometriosis?
Doctors perform two types of operations to treat endometriosis:
· Conservative surgery removes as much endometrial tissue as possible, but preserves your reproductive organs (ovaries and uterus). When your doctor performs this operation through small incisions, it is called laparoscopy. Laparoscopy can also be used to diagnose endometriosis.
· Hysterectomy treats more serious endometriosis. The surgeon removes your uterus and possibly your cervix and ovaries. If you have this operation, you will no longer be able to get pregnant.

The surgeon will use a knife, heat, or laser to remove as much endometrial tissue as possible from organs such as the ovaries, bladder, fallopian tubes, and rectum. A sample of this tissue can be examined by a laboratory. The surgeon will also remove any scar tissue in these organs.
· Finally, the surgeon will close your incisions.
You should be able to go home the same day as your surgery.
A hysterectomy removes your uterus and possibly your cervix. You might also have surgery to remove your ovaries and fallopian tubes, called oophorectomy.
Hysterectomy can be performed in different ways:
· Abdominally . The surgeon makes an incision in the lower pelvis and removes the uterus and other reproductive organs through this incision.
· Vaginally . The surgeon removes your uterus and cervix through your vagina. There is no incision.
· By laparoscopy . The surgeon makes a few small incisions in the abdomen. Your uterus and possibly your cervix and ovaries are removed through these incisions.
You may be able to go home the same day as a laparoscopic hysterectomy. But open surgery usually requires an overnight stay in the hospital.
What to expect after surgery
You will recover faster after laparoscopic surgery than after an open hysterectomy. Your activities may be limited during the first days or weeks after your procedure. Ask your doctor when you can resume driving, working and exercising. Complete healing from a hysterectomy can take four to six weeks.
After the laparoscopy, you may have pain in your shoulder. This is caused by the gas trapped in your belly. The pain should go away within two to three days.
Once you have had a hysterectomy, you will no longer have your period. If your ovaries have been removed, you will begin menopause. This means that you can feel the effects of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and loss of bone density. Talk to your doctor about how to manage these and other symptoms of menopause.
