Oxidative stress what is it?

Sedentary lifestyle, unbalanced nutrition, drug abuse, pollution cause our body to excessively produce free radicals, highly reactive molecules that can damage DNA and other cellular structures. The excess of these substances gives rise to what is called "oxidative stress" which is responsible for many pathologies and which endangers fertility.

It is a pathological condition due to the disruption of a dynamic balance between the production of oxidizing elements and their elimination by antioxidant mechanisms. It is caused by free radicals: highly reactive chemical species capable of modifying the molecules with which they react, causing serious damage, for example, to DNA and cell membranes. Free radicals are generated by the metabolism of oxygen in the mitochondria, the energy centers of the cell. Underbalanced conditions, ROS is helpful and is used by the body to protect itself from bacteria, thin the blood, control blood pressure, and more. Free radicals that are not used for these purposes are then neutralized by antioxidant substances produced by the cell itself. However, when the balance is altered, oxidative stress occurs.

Oxidative stress on reproduction

In many ways, which manifest themselves at different levels. Oxidative stress can alter gametogenesis, that is, the development of gametes: in humans, it can damage the structure of spermatozoa, which are characterized by an absence of cytoplasm and have a membrane rich in fatty acids easily attackable and oxidizable by free radicals. As a result, spermatozoa can decrease in number, their vital capacity and motility can deteriorate, they can present malformations. All deficits that prevent fertilization of eggs.

The oocyte, on the other hand, appears to be more resistant to attack from free radicals; however, oxidative stress can also cause several problems in women: it can induce early menopause, or promote polycystic ovary disease, or even contribute to the development of endometriotic lesions. The excess of free radicals can also affect the embryo, preventing its transplant, or altering its development to promote an abortion interrupting the pregnancy.

The spongy part (albedo) is rich in flavonoids which make it a powerful antioxidant. Other properties associated with flavonoids are: protective action on the microcirculation, estrogenic and anti-inflammatory action.

Antioxidants are substances capable of neutralizing free radicals and protecting the body against their negative action. The anticarcinogenic properties of lemon are precisely linked to its valuable antioxidant content.

Vitamin C in lemon against infections

Vitamin C to Enhance Fertility in Men & Women

First of all, thanks to its marked antioxidant action, vitamin C (also called ascorbic acid) neutralizes free radicals and other reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by normal energy metabolism. In addition, some studies have shown that vitamin C stimulates the functionality of certain cells of the immune system, such as neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes. When we know the impact that infections, especially genital infections, have on female fertility, we recognize the importance of lemon.

Finally, do not forget that vitamin C, involved in the biosynthesis of collagen, a structural protein of the skin and cartilage, contributes to the integrity of the skin itself, the body's first line of defense, and promotes wound healing.

Studies have shown that low vitamin C intake can be associated with some pregnancy complications, such as pre-eclampsia, anemia, and low birth weight baby. Vitamin C is therefore essential for the maintenance at term and in good conditions of the pregnancy.

How to take advantage of the properties of lemon to get pregnant

“Lemon is a treasure chest of vitamin C, which is easily lost in heat and air. For this reason, it should be used immediately after being pressed, sliced or grated. Here are some ideas.

-Lemon juice is surely the best way to benefit from the properties of lemon. Juice diluted with lukewarm water, drunk in the morning on an empty stomach, stimulates metabolism, regulates the intestine, normalizes pH (that is, the degree of acidity of our body). It's proven !!

-A few drops, sprayed on salads and vegetables in general or on meat and fish, facilitate digestion and absorption of iron and also have a detoxifying effect.

-Chopped zest, added to salted shortcrust pastry, shortcrust pastry for desserts or meatballs, thanks to the essential oils it contains, gives a delicious aroma and flavor.

-Personally, I also combine it with a salad of cooked potatoes and legumes, to take advantage of both its aroma and its beneficial properties. If you play sports, you can consume 2-3 lemon slices with a drizzle of honey: it is pure energy.
