Natural herbal treatment for schizophrenia

Natural schizophrenia treatment

Our natural treatment for schizophrenia contains amino acids and antioxidants which not only have virtually no side effects, but which are associated with a host of other benefits such as reduced inflammation in the brain.

Traditional medicines (herbal medicine ) have been used to treat mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, for over 2,000 years. Herbs can also have antipsychotic properties when used in a Western biomedical setting.

1. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha for schizophrenia

Ashwagandha is another calming herb useful for depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions due to its anxiolytic and antidepressant effect.

According to a 2013 study published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology, this herb may offer hypoglycemic and cholesterol-lowering effects to combat the side effects of antipsychotics associated with an increased incidence of metabolic syndrome.

Take 500 mg of ashwagandha supplement capsules, 4 times a day for at least 1 month.

2. Chamomile

Camomile for schizophrenia

Chamomile has calming and relaxing properties. It also promotes restful sleep and is therefore useful for people with schizophrenia.

  1. Add 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers to 1 cup of hot water.
  2. Cover and let stand 5 minutes.
  3. Filter the solution.
  4. Drink every day at night.

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that must be treated under the supervision of an expert. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to have the disease diagnosed and treated by a professional.

Home remedies serve as a complementary treatment to help calm the mind and reduce symptoms. Additionally, only the first few remedies discussed in this article have been shown to be scientifically beneficial (further study is still needed).

Thus, Panax ginseng should not be confused with American and Siberian ginseng.

3. Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo tea for schizophrenia 1

Ginkgo biloba is being studied by the scientific community as an adjunct to schizophrenia because it may help improve the effectiveness of antipsychotics. It is also believed to protect against neural damage caused by antipsychotics.

The typical dosage of Ginkgo biloba is 360 mg of a standardized extract of Ginkgo biloba per day in divided doses for up to 16 weeks.

4. Fish oil

Fish oil for schizophrenia

People with schizophrenia tend to have low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood as this is associated with a depletion of certain fatty acids. Therefore, fish oil supplements rich in EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) may help reduce symptoms of schizophrenia.

A 2010 study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that omega-3 PUFAs (polyunsaturated fatty acids) may help reduce the risk of developing psychotic illness.

  • Take 1 to 4 grams of fish oil supplements per day. Check with your doctor for the correct dosage, especially if you are taking blood thinners or medications for diabetes or cardiovascular disease.
  • Also include salmon, sardines, trout, and other cold water fish in your diet. Flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other seeds also contain omega-3 fatty acids.

5. Brahmi

Brahmi for schizophrenia

Brahmi, also called bacopa, is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to improve cognitive abilities. Animal studies indicate that it can also help improve schizophrenia.

Although the exact mechanism of how it works is not known, it is believed to help stabilize certain chemicals in the brain. It also exhibits neuroprotective properties.

Take 500 mg of brahmi extract per day, for at least 1 month.

6. Antioxidants

Antioxidants for schizophrenia

Antioxidant vitamins such as vitamins A, C, and E are believed to be helpful in reducing the severity of schizophrenia. Vitamin C is also an anti-stress vitamin. Research indicates that oxidative stress may play a role in the development of this brain disorder. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

  • Include foods rich in antioxidants like blueberries, strawberries, lemons, oranges, Indian gooseberry (amla), spinach, and carrots in your diet.
  • You can also take multivitamins and vitamin supplements. Consult your doctor before starting any supplementation regimen.

7. Exercise

Exercise could help people with schizophrenia 1

Regular exercise is good for physical maintenance as well as for the mental well-being of schizophrenics. Helps improve your mood and relieve anxiety and depression.

Participate in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day. You can try walking, jogging, or weight training.

Yoga is also considered to be an adjunct to schizophrenia therapy because it can help reduce psychotic symptoms, produce neurobiological changes, and improve cognition and quality of life.

8. Basil

Basil for schizophrenia

Basil leaves have excellent antioxidant properties and promote brain functionality to improve symptoms of schizophrenia.

  1. Soak a few basil leaves in hot water for about 5 minutes.
  2. Filter and sweeten with honey.
  3. Drink this tea twice a day.

9. Green cardamom

Cardamom seeds for schizophrenia

Green cardamom seeds can also be used to fight schizophrenia because they are good for the nervous system

  1. Infuse 1 teaspoon of powdered cardamom seeds in 1 cup of hot water for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Filter and sweeten with a little sugar or honey.
  3. Drink this tea twice a day.

Additional tips

  • Don't skip your meds.
  • Stay away from drugs and smoking, as they can worsen the symptoms of schizophrenia and make treatment less effective.
  • Schizophrenic patients and their families can join self-help and support groups.
  • Consider seeking help from case managers and professional caregivers for day programs.
