A Code to help prevent cancer
Protect your child from certain risks of cancer in adulthood
Preventing cancer gives you the best possible chance possible to limit your personal risk of being affected. You cannot control all the factors that can cause cancer - there is no such thing as "zero risk" even with a lifestyle that meets all the recommendations - but you can act on some of them while protecting your health daily.
The four main risk factors for cancer are, in order, tobacco, alcohol, an unbalanced diet, and a lack of physical activity.
DO NOT SMOKE
Tobacco ranks first among all cancer risk factors and is the leading cause of preventable death: the annual number of tobacco-related deaths in France is estimated at 78,000, including 47,000 deaths from cancer.
Stopping smoking is always beneficial for health, regardless of the amount consumed and the duration of consumption. The earlier you stop, the faster you decrease your risk of cancer, especially lung cancer.
Alcohol is classified as a certain carcinogen (level 1) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (ARC). It is estimated that in 2009, more than 15,000 cancer deaths were attributable to alcohol. Consuming it greatly increases the risk of developing certain cancers, in particular of the aerodigestive tract.

To effectively reduce this risk, it is recommended to limit not only the amount of alcohol drunk on each occasion of consumption, but also the frequency of these occasions. It takes 10 years of stopping alcohol consumption to see this risk decrease. After 20 years, it is no longer significantly different from that of people who have never drunk.
Preventing the risk of certain cancers also involves food.
It is recommended to limit:
- red meat (less than 500 g per week);
- Cooked meats ;
- salt: table salt, cooking salt and foods preserved by curing promote stomach cancer;
Other behaviors have a protective effect against cancer:
- Prefer foods with low energy density, such as fruits and vegetables, to foods too high in fat, sugar and / or salt;
- consume at least five fruits and vegetables per day, or 400 g;
- favor whole foods, which are rich in fiber (rice, pasta, cereals, etc.).
The daily practice of a physical activity reduces the risk of developing many chronic diseases, in particular cancer. It is also a way to limit weight gain, another risk factor for cancer.

Any physical activity (climbing stairs, walking, cycling, swimming…) for at least 30 minutes a day helps to keep in shape and reduce the risk of several cancers.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM UV RAYS
For any outdoor activity (leisure, sport or professional), you should adopt the right reflexes:
- Avoid exposure to the sun between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Seek shade;
- go out covered: clothes, hat, glasses;
- frequently renew the application of high protection anti-UVA and UVB sunscreen;
- watch her skin.
- Artificial UV rays (tanning beds) are also dangerous for the skin: their use is not recommended, and prohibited before 18 years.
All of these prevention tips are also beneficial against other chronic diseases (cardiovascular ailments, diabetes, etc.). They will also allow you to improve your quality of life.
To help you protect yourself from risk factors for cancer, you can also benefit from preventive measures aimed at limiting exposure related to your environment, whether at home, outdoors or at work.
A CODE TO HELP PREVENT CANCER
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a WHO agency specializing in cancerology, has drawn up a "European Code against cancer". This code proposes simple measures that any citizen can take to promote cancer prevention. It includes, in particular, advice on tobacco, alcohol and nutrition.
GUARDING YOUR CHILD FROM CERTAIN CANCER RISKS IN ADULTS
You can help your child reduce their risk of developing cancer as an adult:
- have a healthy lifestyle during and after pregnancy (in particular no tobacco or alcohol);
- do not smoke in their presence: children are even more sensitive to passive smoking than adults;
- Offer them a balanced diet and monitor their weight gain;
- encourage them to do at least one hour of physical activity per day;
- protect them from the sun (cream, hat, t-shirt, glasses)…
Cancers affecting children (leukemia, neuroblastomas…) are unfortunately impossible to prevent in the current state of knowledge.
